Pre-Therapy Processing
Something I experience time & time again as a therapist: clients who are unsure what they want to talk about in therapy. They know they want to work on themselves, but they don’t know what they want to work on or process.
This is so normal! It’s uncomfortable & sometimes foreign to take up space—let alone 50 full minutes of a therapy session focused on us. Plus, we live in a society that is hyperfocused on productivity & making the most of our time.
I have my own knowledge & opinions about the therapy space. On one hand, I hope all clients can just learn to “be”, without any agenda or any stress to show up a certain way. But ultimately, I believe that it is a space for clients to get whatever they need & want from that time. If they want some sort of agenda or specific idea to help them get what they need from their session, then that’s what I want for them, too.
So, without providing too much structure, I’ve created a 2-page handout of questions to ask yourself before your therapy session. There are 7 main areas to explore: identity/self-esteem, self-care, emotions, decisions/choices, relationships, trauma, & symptoms/coping/grounding. Within each of these 7 areas there are 4+ exploration questions to help clients check in with themselves. These questions are a way to take inventory of your recent experiences & pinpoint areas of your life you want to process or might need help exploring.
I hope this helps you in your exploration! Happy healing :)
